I live in Germany, and here the video game censorship is just baffling. Some games are on this “index” which means they’re not allowed to be sold here. Such games usually have sexual content, show drug abuse, have anything to do with NS-Germany, excessive graphic violence or all of the above. It’s fine for the government to pass strict laws when it concerns minors, but when it comes to fully grown people I for one do not want to be taken by the hand and shown what I can see and what not.

For example, the Bluray – HDDVD format war was ultimately disadvantageous to many consumers who ‘picked the wrong side’.

This is not really any different to a business that is no longer profitable and goes out of business. So the answer here is: So what? Those resources will just be reallocated elsewhere.

Another point is that the establishment of market standardisation is fundamentally monopolistic.

1. I disagree with this – once a standard is established, people can still compete in that standard. eg. who makes the best Bluray disc readers/writers? In addition to this, people can compete by creating entirely new ways of doing things, such as inventing newer technologies/standards.
2. Even if it is monopolistic, the government is a monopoly and so it doesn’t really work as a solution.
